Science and Torah: Conflicting, Compatible or Complimentary Truths?
Thursday, May 14 & 21
6:30 - 7:45 PM
With Dr. Steven Steinberg
Congregation Beth Shalom
3433 Walters Avenune, Northbrook

Science and religion often appear to be in conflict.  Is the universe 15 billion years old or 6 days plus 6000 years old?  Is there only a physical aspect to our universe or is there a metaphysical aspect as well?  Is the future fated and predetermined or do we have free will?  Often these conflicts are resolved by trying to give science and religion separate kingdoms to rule.  On this account, science and religion can get along.  As long as each respects the boundaries, they appear compatible.  This presentation will show that, in fact, science and Torah are complimentary truths.  To fully understand one we need the other.

Fee: $25 for DSI Members/$40 for Non-Members
Fee per Session: $15 for DSI Members/$22 for Non-Members

RECORDING AVAILABLE

Click below to listen to a podcast of the May 19 class Marranos, or the First Modern Jews
With Dr. Yohanan Petrovsky Shtern at the Jewish Reconstructionist Congregation

Marranos, Conversos, or New Christians deveoped dual Judeo-Christian identities unheard of in late Medieval Europe.  We will explore their reasons to convert and stay in Spain, their desire to retain elements of Jewish religious practices, their relations with the Inquisition, the growing persecutions against them, and circumstances that pushed them to emigrate to Amsterdam, Venice, or Istanbul.  We will look into the grass-roots culture and everyday behavior of the Marranos through the prism of their integration into majority culture.  We will discuss Marranos' encounter with Christianity and how this encounter transformed their vision of traditional Judaism making them into the forefathers of Spinoza and Marx.
